Betty White was Red Hot
Golden Girl Betty White was fantastic as host of SNL this past weekend, the penultimate episode of the season. (Alec Baldwin hosts the season finale this week – and rumor has it lots of familiar guests – like JTims, will make cameos!)
Part of what was funny about Ms. White’s appearance was her age. In the late-in-the-show "Scared Straight" sketch, the sight and sound of an old woman acting like a thug was simply funny. That sketch sometimes falls flat but White’s age made this more hilarious than usual. (For more Betty as a thug fun, check out the digital short.)
Also adding the greatness of the episode was that all the great SNL ladies of the 90s and early 00s came back – Maya Rudolph, Ana Gasteyer, Tina Fey, Rachel Dratch, Amy Poehler and Molly Shannon – and some of them even revived their always-funny characters. For example, the first sketch of the night was Ana and Molly reviving the "Delicious Dish" ladies. Brilliant. (I still can’t look at Alec Baldwin without thinking about his Schweddy Balls. Good times.)
It made it long for the days when there were so many funny ladies on the show. Don’t get me wrong, I totally dig the male talent on the show now, Andy Samberg, Jason Sudeikis, Will Forte, Seth Meyers… But wouldn’t it be great if there could be all those funny dudes and all the funny ladies at once? Then the writers would have more latitude in the kinds of sketches they could write, since they wouldn’t have to worry about whether or not they have enough guys or gals to fill the sketch. Also, then SNL might be consistently funny, instead of only during sweeps weeks. The only solace here is that most of those ladies are New Yorkers, or are frequently in town, and are good sports about popping in every now and then.
Congrats to SNL on a very funny, solid show last week and here’s hoping that this week’s Alec Baldwin hosted season finale is just as funny – and Schweddy!
