Wilfred Dear readers, are you watching Wilfred? It's a new dark comedy on FX starring Elijah Wood. His character, Ryan, befriends Wilfred, his neighbor's dog. Well, to everyone but Ryan, Wilfred appears as a dog. To Ryan, Wilfred appears as a man in a dog suit. It's crazy but also wickedly good. Check your local listings for air dates and times. And in the meantime, read through this AV Club interview with Wood.
Muppet Madness As we look forward to the Thanksgiving release of The Muppets, the new Muppet movie starring and co-written by Jason Segel, I'll do my best to bring you various Muppet news.
August will see the release of The Green Album on which contemporary artists, like Weezer, cover Muppet songs, like "Rainbow Connection." Visit pitchfork.com for the track listing.
Need to brush up your Muppet? Empire Online has a guide to the Muppet movies, beginning with The Muppet Movie (my very favorite movie, Muppet or otherwise) and continuing through to Muppets from Space.
"Another Opening, Another Show" We learned of more shows that will hit the board in the 2011-2012 season:
Update: Last week we learned that the Kennedy Center production of Follieswould run on Broadway. This week, we learned some specifics: Previews will begin August 7 and be followed by a September 12 opening. Bernadette Peters will appear in the Broadway transfer.
This winter, American Repertory Theater's production of Porgy and Bess will play Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre. The production will begin previews on December 17 and officially open on January 12. But the best news is that it will star Norm Lewis, Joshua Henry and-wait for it-Audra McDonald!!! If Audra is singing on a stage, you go see her, dear readers!
Venus in Fur, which received nearly unanimous critical acclaim in its off-Broadway bow in 2010 and starred recent Tony nominee Nina Arianda, will transfer to Broadway. Manhattan Theatre Club is co-producing the Broadway transfer; as such the play will run at the Biltmore Theatre. (This theatre is actually now called the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, but it was called the Biltmore when Hair played there in the 60s so I like to continue calling it the Biltmore!) Arianda will reprise her role for the Broadway run, which begins previews on October 13 and will open in November.
