Tony Awards The Tony Award nominations were announced this Tuesday. Here's the complete list of nominees, including my commentary, of course! I'm most excited about the fact that the glorious and magical Peter and the Starcatcher earned nine nominations, more than any other play. Once led the pack of musicals, much to my dismay. I'm glad that the nominating committee remembered Jessie Mueller from On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, but I'm thoroughly upset and confused because they forgot to nominate Raul Esparza for Leap of Faith. But that's what I thought. What about the nominees? Playbill, Broadway.com and Broadwayworld.com found out. My favorite reaction comes from Starcatcher co-director Alex Timbers. He says, "The breadth of nominations [for Starcatcher] really reflects the nature of the process—the show is built by an ensemble of actors and designers working together as equals and each excelling because of it." Well said! (And Broadway.com lists (and asks readers to vote on) some surprising snubs, like Raul Esparza, while Broadwayworld.com lists everyone who did not receive a nomination. Unfortunately, with Tony nominations - or, rather, a lack thereof - also comes some closing notices. Struggling shows hoping to have received a Tony boost sometimes close if they do not receive any nominations; others that receive a few nominations hold out until after the Tonys, but if they don't win, you can expect to see closing notices. And so, we have our first two Tony casualties. The terrific Seminar, a new play written by Theresa Rebeck and directed by Sam Gold, will close this weekend, May 6. The play will have played 26 previews and 191 performances. The following week, Magic/Bird, chronicling the careers of and relationship between basketball legends Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, will close. After its final performance on May 12, Magic/Bird will have played 23 previews and 38 performances. Neither Seminar nor Magic/Bird received a single Tony nomination. (In Seminar's case, this is evidence of what a wonderfully packed year it was for plays.)
Sound City After teasing Foo Fighters fans for months, it's been officially announced that frontman Dave Grohl is directing and producing Sound City, a documentary about the iconic recording studio in California. As noted in the announcement in Variety, Grohl says, "Sound City is a film about America's greatest unsung recording studio. Deep in California's sun-burnt San Fernando Valley, it was the birthplace of a legend. It was witness to history." (Look at this hand-written note from Grohl!) Stay tuned for additional details as they're announced.
