Golden Globes Wrap Up
The 70th annual Golden Globes are in the books! Argo took home the top honor, as did its skilled director, Ben Affleck. HBO's Girls also had a big night, nabbing statues for creator and star Lena Dunham and the show itself. Read my official wrap up for the full list of winners and dish on the dresses (and head to my Pinterest Golden Globes board for more). And below, a little wrap up from around the media-sphere:
- Via Twitter, Breaking Bad and Argo star Bryan Cranston said, "Besides Argo and Ben winning last night. My best Golden Globes moment: Hearing Mandy Patinkin singing Baby It's Cold Outside at the urinal."
- Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield breaks down the Globes
- Head to IMDB for lots of Golden Globes party pics
- The Hollywood Reporter has photos of the winners and revelers being silly backstage and at the parties
- Buzz Feed offers "17 Reasons Why Jennifer Lawrence Won the Golden Globes," and then offers "18 Reasons Why Jessica Chastain is Cooler Than You."
Last week the Oscar nominations were announced (ICYMI: full list of nominees) and this week, The Hollywood Reporter's awards guru, Scott Feinberg, brings us his first post-nomination announcement Feinberg Forecast. He notes:
- statistics (like this one: Silver Linings Playbook is only the 14th film, and the first in 31 years, to receive nominations in all four acting categories, and this one: Amy Adams (The Master) is only the eighth person to receive at least four Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominations); snubs (like Ben Affleck and Leonardo DiCaprio); and clues as to who might win on Oscar night (like the fact that most voters hold Daniel Day-Lewis and his performance in Lincoln in high esteem; if he wins, he will be the only actor to win three Best Actor Oscars - other actors have won two, but not three)
- It's possible for Ben Affleck to win Best Director...if a write-in campaign gets going
- Feinberg presents his projected winners
In addition, the academy announced this week that Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana will host the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Scientific and Technical Awards on Saturday, February 9. See the press release for details.
The cast of Les Miserables will perform at the Academy Awards. There's no confirmation yet of which song will be performed and therefore which cast members will appear, but my guess (and Playbill's) is that they'll probably bring as much of the company as possible—including (hopefully) Aaron Tveit—and perform a group number like "One Day More." Tune into the Oscars on February 24 to watch!
After the nominations were announced, the academy released several promotional videos featuring host Seth MacFarlane. See them all in my Oscar Promos post, and check out my favorite one now:
You may recall that back in September it was announced that Norbert Leo Butz would star in the Chicago premiere of the musical Big Fish, based on the eponymous film and the novel Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions. This week, we got word that the new adapted musical will play Broadway this fall. Previews will begin on September 5 with opening night set for October 6. Butz will star in the production (making it a homecoming of sorts: the show will run at the Neil Simon Theatre, recent home to Catch Me if You Can, for which Butz won his second Tony), and will be joined by an impressive cast that includes recent Giant costars Kate Baldwin (Finian's Rainbow) and Bobby Steggert (Assistance). Susan Stroman (The Scottsboro Boys, For the Love of Duke) will direct and choreograph the show, which is written by Andrew Lippa (music and lyrics) and John August (book). Stay tuned for details!
Several sure-to-be-entertaining evenings of music and theatre will be broadcast on PBS as part of the Live from Lincoln Center series. Below are some highlights of upcoming broadcasts; Playbill has more. (Check local listings to confirm air times.)

Graceland, Starring Aaron Tveit
You know Aaron Tveit (Catch Me if You Can, Les Miserables) heads the cast of the new USA show, Graceland, right? Entertainment Tonight's Jarett Wieselman has named it one of 2013's Six Best New Shows. Watch the trailer, below, to find out why, and tune in this summer when Graceland premieres!
Though Peter and the Starcatcher will conclude its Broadway run this weekend, the beautiful, magical show will be up and running off-Broadway (again) soon: the New World Stages production of the Tony-winning show will begin performances on March 18. Casting has yet to be announced (though we know that several cast members have either already left the show for other projects (like Celia Kenan-Bolger) or have other projects lined up). Stay tuned for details, and if you don't catch Starcatcher this weekend, be sure to drop into Neverland at New World Stages in March.
- Audra McDonald is set to appear on The Good Wife.
- The Hollywood Reporter checks in with busy actor Chris Messina (The Newsroom, The Mindy Project, Argo) about adding writer and producer to his job description.
- The Muppets will be back in theaters on March 21, 2014.
- Not that there are rumors of it actually happening, but in case there is a remake of the movie of Grease, Buzz Feed already has a cast in place, and it include theatre favorite Jonathan Groff.
- Director Kathryn Bigelow addresses concerns and accusations about torture and how it is depicted in Zero Dark Thirty. Meanwhile, Matt Taibbi chimes in, saying Zero Dark Thirty allows bin Laden to have the last laugh over America.
- NBC has ordered a pilot of Assistance, written and executive produced by playwright Leslye Headland and based on her eponymous play. Way to go, Headland! The Wrap has details.
- Barbra Streisand will receive Lincoln Center's Chaplin Award in April.
- Cole Porter's Can Can might come back to Broadway in spring 2014.
- Dave Grohl leaked another tune from the forthcoming Real to Reel album, the soundtrack to his documentary, Sound City:
